Rudraksha is a Sanskrit word composed of Rudra and Akṣa: where Rudra is one of the Vedic names of Shiva and Akṣa means ‘tears’. Thus, the name means “The Tears of Shiva”.
Some Sanskrit dictionaries also translate akṣa as eye, making Rudraksha mean “Eye of Shiva”. Akṣa can also mean “soul” or “spiritual knowledge” (Rakṣā, from the root rakṣ, is often translated as “to protect”).
